I have been hosting the Woodland Hills chapter of Green Drinks for about a year now. Green Drinks is a simple premise, an informal networking event where environmentally minded people meet over drinks. Edwin Datschefski, Paul Scott, and some friends started Green Drinks in London in 1989. It has spread to 90 cities in the United Kingdom, 428 cities in the US, and 60 more countries around the world.

I learned of Green Drinks, from Margaret Lydecker, over dinner about three years ago when attending a Green Expo in Vegas. Margaret started the New York City Chapter in 2002 and it is the largest global chapter with 14,000 plus members. Wow!

I’ve had so much fun meeting new people from all different kinds of backgrounds. The one thread that brings us all together is being green or wanting to learn more about being green. I have made great lasting friendships through this event. This is why I want to tell all those who have never heard of Green Drinks to find one in your local hood. If there is not one, start one up. North Dakota and Utah have yet to begin a chapter. What’s stopping you from starting one??

Every month people meet up at informal sessions. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organizing network. Many people have found employment, developed new ideas, done deals, and had moments of serendipity. It’s a force for the good!

All Green Drinks follow the Green Drinks Code. Read it to see how Green Drinks works and then apply to set one up in your town or city. More tips and mentors are available once you have started. Meet for some beverages, have a chat and plug into your local green networking group.

An International Day of Climate Action
Aerial Photo in Warner Center Park
24 October 2009 – 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Action: Aerial Photo- Spell out the numbers 350 with people at the Warner Center Park. This is an unpermitted gathering which means that nothing can be sold for a profit and we must be respectful of our noise levels.

Location: Warner Center Park- Also known as Warner Ranch Park
NE Corner of Park- In the open area of the field.
5800 Topanga Canyon Blvd.
Woodland Hills, CA 91367

Times: 3PM-5PM
Please arrive in plenty of time to get into formation for the photo. We will have an information booth set up with additional information to help expedite this event. I will do my best to make this as seamless as possible. If you RSVP you will receive an email with all the final details to reduce confusion.

We will have a template on the ground in the shape of 350. When you arrive please take a position. Feel free to relax and sit if you are an early arrival. It should be pretty straight forward. Once everyone has settled into formation we will make sure our photographer, he will be on the roof of the Marriott, is happy with the look. Once approval is given I will address the crowd briefly. Once I am finished I will get into formation with you and we will shoot several photos. I will inform you all when we are able to break away from the formation.

Michael Wittman from Third Planet Energy will be there with his biodiesel car. If you have any questions about this world he is your guy. Thank you
Michael!!

Please invite as many people as you know. We will look back on this day and be proud we participated in this very important day!!

The Metro bus stops at the transit center on Owensmouth which is just a block north of the Park.

Important Note: Please RSVP!! This will help with the organization of the aerial photo. Everyone is donating their time and their equipment so this event is a very grassroots effort.

Please bring your own water in a reusable Kanteen. At this point we do not have any donated beverage stands. You can contact me, Tanya, for more information or additional questions at this email address: info@allgreenthings.com or my phone number: (818) 346-7763 if you have any additional questions.

If you would like to volunteer your time for the event day please contact me. I need an additional group of 5 to help organize people into the formation.

Contest:My photographer and I have entered into the 350 aerial contest and this photo along with thousands of others will rotate in time square. It is all really exciting. Stay tuned…

A few weeks ago I participated in a conference call that was a briefing with Bill McKibben and 350.org. For those of you who have never heard the name Bill McKibben, he is one of the most important environmental figures of our time. The call was to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis. The message was clear, we need to move quickly and in unison because 2009 is a crucial year.

First, let me explain what 350 stands for. The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth. FYI… we are already at 387 ppm. 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide–measured in “Parts Per Million” in our atmosphere. 350 PPM–it is the number humanity needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change.

2009 is a crucial year because the United Nations is working on a treaty, which is to be completed in December 2009 at the conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. The problem is that the treaty currently on the table does not meet the severity of the climate crisis and is way too weak to get us back to safety. This treaty needs to put a high enough price on carbon so we stop using so much.

The mission is to make sure everyone knows the target so that our political leaders feel real pressure to act. Reaching 350 ppm will require unprecedented international cooperation. You may be asking yourself how you can possibly be apart of this mission or even make a difference. I asked myself that very question. Action is the answer!

Taking action in our lives and in our communities is the first step. So on October 24th, the International Day of Climate Action, people will be mobilizing all over the world with different events. I encourage you to go to www.350.org and do something in your community!! Come up with what ever feels right for you and your community. Do a presentation, a bike ride or a tree planting. Whatever feels right, just do it!! Do something!

I am organizing an event in Woodland Hills, CA. My call to action is to get as many people together in our local park to take an aerial photo with people in the shape of 350. I will then head back to 350.org/take-action to upload the images and join thousands of people all over the planet taking action to ensure a safe climate and a just future. I will keep you posted on how it all turns out.
